Sem Schilt Seminar 17 may 2008
Saturday morning 6:30 am, the alarm clock rings, it’s time! Today we were taught by triple K-1 Champion Shihan Sem Schilt. We were expected at 8.45 am in the sport complex in Sliedrecht were the Shihans Ruud Muller, John v/d Werf, Jan de Bruin and of course Shihan Sem Schilt entered the hall.
From this moment on Sem Schilt took over the lesson as we continued the warming-up. We started easily with punches and some combinations. When we came to the point were we were properly warmed up we were able start the real deal.
The first part of the seminar contained shadow fighting, in which long distance punches, hooks and several kicks were the center. Shihan Sem Schilt interrupted the lesson regularly to give the necessary instructions and assisted the group when needed. Also the other present instructors Shihan Ruud Muller, Shihan John v/d Werf, Shihan Jan de Bruin, Sensei Robert Akse and Sensei Henk Gerhards strolled around to dot the I’s.
After a short recess of 15 minutes, we were aloud to go again, this time we had to use shin protection. There was another short warming up to get warmed up again. This warming up existed of shadow fighting. The time had come for the physical work, no shadow fighting, but just full-contact fighting. In pairs, several combinations were practised, in which the low-kicks with the shin (mawashi geri gedan sune) were emphasized.
After these combinations were practiced well, the time had come for something different. Shihan Sem Schilt asked us to form groups of four. We were supposed to have one member of the group standing in the middle, surrounded by the other three. The other three had to attack the one in the middle one by one. The job of the middle person was to defend the attacks successfully and to counter hard. After this exercise it was already time for formal greeting.
After this it was time to take pictures. It was a very learning and fun experience. To get a lesson from a legend like Sem Schilt makes an impression and we won’t forget that!
